Fixes for Aida fabric

I am an obvious novice cross stitcher and have run into an issue. I started to fill in the background in my pattern with white floss before realizing it was designed to remain blank (white). I removed the stitching from the 3X5” section. Bad news was that this section now looks OBVIOUSLY different from the rest of the unstitched background. (Holes are larger). I know that I may not be able to make this look perfect, but I am looking for a fix that can help salvage my Christmas Stocking project (after hundreds of hours of work...stitch, recount, remove, restitch, untangle, recount,..REPEAT!)
I am thinking that backing the Aida with white fabric lining, or an iron-on backing, prior to finishing as a sticking might be the answer.
Tell me that I am not the first one to make this sort of mistake!
Thanks in advance for sharing any suggestions!

    Peggy,
I have had this happen to me when I needed to rip out stitches. My solution is to soak the fabric in water for several hours and then the holes usually match the rest of the fabric. I have instructions on how to wash your fabric here: https://www.cyberstitchers.com/resources/finishing_techniques/washing_counted_cross_stitch_projects

Aida will shrink when you wash it, which is safe to do if you used DMC. You could also wait til finished and do a 3or4 strand tent stitch to fill white areas. Go to top
