Cross stitch vs Hardanger

I have a pattern (Sharon Pope) where you can do the windows are the cottage in either hardinger or cross-stitch.
The windows are shown in their own pattern separate from the cottage pattern.

It says "Skip 2 stitches on the petit point chart whenever stitching abuts the window frame".

I'm confused as on the cottage pattern there are not enough squares for the petit point window piece.
