In what order should complete the different cross stitches for: whole stitch, half stitch, 1/4 stitch, 3/4 stitch, continuous stitch, cast off, and French knots in cross stitch projects?

    Sarah,
Recently, I read in a cross-stitch article that suggested the cross-stitches and fractional stitches should be completed first and then add backstitch to define the design. I always add beads or stitch French knots last. Here is a link that might help you further.

Hi. I’ve always done half and quarter stitches as I go along. French knots are always last because they need to be on top of what was already stitched. When you cast off/on depends entirely on how you’d like. I grid my projects. Depending on the pattern I may stitch certain squares at once or I may just go color by color or section by section. It’s entirely up to you. I don’t think there are a whole lot of rules about stitching, except make sure your X’s all go in the same direction, try to keep appropriate tension on your floss, back stitched details and beads and French knots are last.

The whole point is to enjoy yourself and relax while you stitch. If you’re not selling your work or doing commissioned work it doesn’t have to be perfect. Inevitably a stitch will be out of place or the wrong color etc, but those end up being tiny little personalized details that only you will know about.
